Nearly 70 people closed off Hastings Street between Carroll and Columbia Friday afternoon to protest gentrification
Amy Widmer was one of the organizers of the student led protest.
“Today is an action primarily made up of students, mainly SFU but some other students, in support of the vendors on East Hastings, and also in support of everyone fighting against gentrification”
All week, police have been moving sidewalk vendors to what they call contained, sanctioned markets.
“People down here are materially poor,” says activist John Allen Douglas, “and they’re gradually being pushed out of here.”
Protesters claim the police crackdown started because a new condo development is opening soon.
