The City of Vancouver, along with emergency services, conducted an emergency exercise in the Riley Park neighbourhood on Friday afternoon.
While the emergency drill was planned as a response to a severe weather event, Director of Emergency Management Daniel Stevens says these same techniques would be used in response to a potential terrorist attack like the one in Paris.
“Whether it’s a terrorist attack, whether it’s the earthquake, or whether a fire or chemical spill, a lot of the functions are similar that need to be enacted”
“One reminder of the horrific events that happened last night in Paris of the importance of preparing. The scenario there has been quite different from what we’re doing today, but the community there – they were asked to shelter in place. So the actions that people need to take can be very very similar to what we’re doing today.”
Sheltering-in-place is when people are asked to stay indoors or go indoors due to a hazardous situation.
