SFU student Mel Ticherafi is studying on the West Coast but is originally from Paris and is thankful for social media helping her locate friends and family still in her hometown.
She was up until the early hours of this morning tracking them down to make sure they were all safe, mostly via Facebook.
Facebook has a distress signal which uses GPS to identify anyone in the affected area.
“I called them and most of my friends put safe on the distress signal that they put on Facebook. So I was pretty happy about that.”
Users are encouraged to “check in” to let friends know that they are safe.
The Paris attacks marked the first time this feature was used outside of a natural disaster.
