Vancouver’s mayor is calling on the provincial government to better protect renters.
Mayor Gregor Robertson says more than 50 per cent of Vancouverites rent, and the vacancy rate is at a record-low.
He’s throwing his support behind a report issued by the newly created renters’ advisory committee.
It’s calling on the province to overhaul the Residential Tenancy Act, to better protect renters.
The recommendations include creating a mandatory minimum penalty on landlords who break the law when evicting tenants, limiting rent increases when fixed-term leases end, and increasing the notice required for a tenant to leave a property due to renovations from two to three months.
The report goes before council on Tuesday.
