Canadian Women’s National Soccer Coach
John Herdman is the Head Coach of the Canada women’s national soccer team. He’s in Vancouver on Saturday to speak at TEDx , and spoke with The Jon McComb Show earlier today about high performance.
To his team, and in his presentations to business groups, Herdman stresses the importance of developing a high-performance culture. That involves learning to overcome adversity with grace.
He stresses that role of leaders to inspire trust, confidence and success.
He says he hasn’t quote figured out what he’s going to speak about at TEDx, simply because he’s used to having to speak spontaneously as a coach in response to things that happen in the moment.
“When you’re working with a group of players you don’t get a chance to rehearse things, you kn ow you have to speak from the heart at times…I know it’ll be around high performance, it’ll be around identity…”
What is high performance?
He says high performance starts with high performing people.
“That’s the starting point, a real clear understanding of what high performance is. And once you get that understanding, that people realize that high performance is not normal; it’s not normal life, it’s not a life of mediocrity, or just doing the things that normal people do. It’s a level of abnormality, it’s crossing a line, and once you cross that line you’re in high performance. And when your’re in there, there’s a realization that this isn’t easy. You know, normal people move away form that sort of lifestyle, because high performance is tough. There’s a lot of expectation, scrutiny, consequences. And that leads to pressure.”
He says high performance, in essence, is a shared understanding of that reality.
John Herdman peaks at TEDx in Vancouver this Saturday, November 14th.
