A Simon Fraser University professor is raising concerns that global warming could bring new disease carrying mosquitoes to BC.
Retired biology professor Peter Belton and his team of researchers have discovered a new mosquito in Maple Ridge.
This tropical mosquito species Aedes Japonicus is known for carrying diseases like West Nile and encephalitis.
“If it’s warm enough, they could get bitten by a Japonicus and then the Japonicus would pass that on to someone else…that wouldn’t be good at all.”
But don’t panic just yet.
“So far no real disease has come up at all”.
According to Belton, four new species of mosquito have arrived in BC in recent years.
