A Vancouver police officer convicted of assault after punching a cyclist over two years ago has been sentenced.
The cell phone video showing Const. Ismail Bhabha striking a cyclist has garnered more than 64,000 views on YouTube.
Now, the officer involved has been handed a conditional discharge, meaning he’ll have no criminal record, and six months’ probation.
VPD Chief Const. Adam Palmer says Bhabha will also keep his job.
“One issue like this may be a blemish on somebody’s career, but it’s not something that determines the rest of their life as a police officer.”
Bhabha had said he was trying to arrest the cyclist because he blew through a red light in Yaletown in March 2013 and wasn’t wearing a helmet.
