Steve Guiotto and Maleva Navarro are getting ready to welcome a new baby in the next two weeks.
This comes after a difficult year for the couple. Last December, Maleva gave birth to a stillborn daughter. The couple got pregnant again and were getting ready to welcome a new baby.
Then last month, a fire destroyed their apartment.
“I was freaking out because we didn’t have two items…and then the fire happened, and I was like – I don’t even have two items! It’s now…two items went to I have to get a 100 items all over again.”
The fire broke out in the apartment near them, and they left their apartment with nothing.
“We grabbed whatever we could think of, which wasn’t much. He runs out without shoes, I run out in flip-flops”
Their apartment was close to where the fire started, and most of their things were destroyed by water damage. They are currently living in a rented apartment.
Only firefighters and a restoration crew were allowed to go back and retrieve things from their apartment.
“And the only thing I really wanted was my daughter’s ashes. The firefighters came in and then came out, and they said that’s the only thing that’s dry in your house.”
Luckily, firefighters were able to gather some other mementos for the family.
“We have a glass cabinet for her…with the pictures that the hospital took when she was born, and the first outfit that we had her in. It was these mementos that they had realized it would be important to put in a box for us. So they did that without even me asking for it.”
Friends and family are rallying around the family with a crowdfunding campaign to get them new things for their new baby Julius – due in mid-November.
“We’re feeling the stress…but we’re feeling a lot of love – so it’s a nice balance right now.”
