Should the City of Vancouver regulate breweries like marijuana dispensaries? Some people in East Vancouver think so.
Judy McGuire of Inner City safety says she received word that the city has given the go-ahead for Strathcona Brewing Company — a craft brewery with a tasting room.
McGuire doesn’t like the idea that the business will be operating in a vulnerable area of Vancouver.
She wants to see the city step in.
“We think it’s great they are restricting where marijuana shops can locate. We think it should be exactly the same thing with any primary brew pub, anything like that”.
Guy Wakeman has two kids and lives in the area.
He’s concerned the brewery is going to be built across from Ray-Cam Community Centre, a place that is used by kids and families.
“You have low income people that are just trying to make it by. In this area as well, just another block up there is an SRO, there are people who live in it that are active in their addictions”.
McGuire and Wakeman say they received word from the city the company has been given the green-light.
CKNW spoke to Tim Knight, the operator of the Brewery.
Knight says he’s still waiting to hear back from the city.
He says the area where he plans to set up is zoned for manufacturing, and his company will be manufacturing beer.
No word from the city on his application status.
