Preliminary results from the Transportation Safety Board say most of the passengers in Tofino’s boat-capsizing were on the left side of the boat’s top deck when a wave approached from the right.
But marine safety expert Joe Spears out of West Vancouver says the investigation can’t be broken down that simply.
He says if the passengers contributed to the ship’s instability and the subsequent capsizing, the investigators should look at the vessel’s certification by Transport Canada.
“The important thing to remember is the certificate is valid on the day it’s issued. As I understand it, it was last inspected in March. It ran every day since then. So what happened in the interim?”
The TSB team has said it will take likely months to determine what exactly caused the boat to sink, leaving five people dead and one still missing.
