OTTAWA — A selection of offbeat moments from Wednesday’s developments on the campaign trail:
DOME SWEET DOME
Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau stepped up on a milk crate in the middle of a crowded restaurant Wednesday in Welland, Ont., to call on his supporters to get involved in an important campaign.
But this one had nothing to do with Monday’s election.
“The fact is, politics is important, this election is important, but there’s something else that’s really important right now that I want you to be engaged citizens about,” Trudeau said at the Blue Star Restaurant.
“You may have heard, there’s a fairly important baseball game.”
Trudeau was referring to the Toronto Blue Jays’ do-or-die playoff game against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday afternoon in Toronto at the Rogers Centre, which has a retractable roof.
Blue Jays fans have been calling for the dome to be opened for the game, but league rules state it must be closed when the temperature dips.
Trudeau then told the partisans to take out their smartphones and tweet to Major League Baseball with #OpenTheDome.
“Major League Baseball needs to hear from Canadians that we can handle a little cool weather and we want the chance to play under an open dome — so get active on that.”
