A friend of the former KGB agent who took asylum in a Vancouver church for six years says he doesn’t understand why the man left.
Errol Povah says he last spoke with Mikhail Lennikov three months ago, before setting out to sea.
“He was concerned he may go to jail or be killed.”
He says Lennikov told him he was in no hurry to leave, so when he made landfall yesterday, he was surprised to hear the news.
“I’m shocked. It’s a mystery to me, I have no clue why he’s gone, whether he did so voluntarily or if he was somehow forced out.
Lennikov was ordered deported in 2009 as a security threat.
His lawyer says he returned to Russia voluntarily, after talks with border officials.
