B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake says the government will give $3 million to the B.C. chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
In a statement, Lake says the funding will help train people in the community like teachers, coaches and police officers to recognize the warning signs of suicide and encourage someone to get help if they are in a desperate situation.
It’s expected 20,000 “emergent gatekeepers” will be trained around B.C. by the year 2018.
The CMHA says more than 500 people die in suicides each year in B.C.
