The Vancouver Aquarium reports its sea otter, Corky, has died after having emergency surgery.
Aquarium staff been caring for Corky, who was rescued off Tofino back in August after getting hit by a boat.
He had a fractured rib, causing air to become trapped under the skin and preventing him from diving or foraging for food. Tests confirmed he also had a ruptured kidney, which was causing him to lose large amounts of blood.
It took three specialized veterinarians to conduct the surgery on Monday, which included a first-ever nephrectomy (kidney removal) and first-known blood transfusion for a sea otter.
Aquarium staff says they knew his condition was critical and the odds were against him, but they tried their best.
