Labour mediators Corinn Bell and Vince Ready have been appointed to the Container Trucking Commissioner Office.
Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone made the announcement Tuesday.
Both have worked closely in the industry to improve wages and working conditions for truckers, and that’s welcome news for Unifor’s Gavin McGarrigle who represents them.
“It’s nice to have someone appointed, even on an interim basis that knows the sector and we’re happy to roll up our sleeves and sit down with Mr. Ready and Ms. Bell and try to get some action that’s urgently needed to help these drivers.”
Among their chief concerns are enforcing the issue of outstanding wages owed to truckers by six companies who underpaid their workers.
“We’ve been saying for months there’s been non-compliance with the act and the regulations that these trucking companies are just thumbing their noses at the law and drivers are still waiting to get the cheques in their hands that they’re rightfully owed.”
McGarrigle argues companies who don’t cough up the retroactive pay should be removed from the Port.
