After going without one for two years, the City of Surrey has chosen a location for a winter homeless shelter to open between November and March.
The 40-person shelter will be in the old liquor store inside the Dell Shopping Centre in Whalley.
The city struggled to find a proper location after their previous shelter was sold to a developer in 2013. Staff looked at several locations but ran into concerns from neighbours and business owners.
City councillor Vera LeFranc is confident there’ll be no issues with this spot.
“We have a community advisory committee we’ll have set up so we can address any issues as they arise.”
LeFranc adds the 24-hour shelter will be fenced and screened, with the local business improvement association assisting to make sure neighbours are happy.
