They say if it goes ahead, the project would threaten years of work to build a better relationship with the federal government.
Grand Chief Stewart Phillip is among those warning the outcome of the challenge could decide if future relations with governments friendly, or more confrontational in tone.
Protestors are expressing their support for First Nations groups on the streets of Downtown Vancouver.

“I super-believe that First Nations are going to, like be like really, really, really strong in the coming years in regards to energy and policy in Canada. I’d rather be on board now than later.”
Eight aboriginal bands are among those involved in the challenge.
