Former prime minister Jean Chretien stopped by Vancouver on Thursday, bringing his old-school charm to the campaign trail for local Liberal candidates.
In his unique style, Chretien entered the room at federal party’s office with a bold and warm, “Here I am!”
He took on a broad of topics, from banning the niqab — saying it’s up to the courts to decide — to the Conservative refrain about Liberal leader Justin Trudeau not being ready.
“None of us had the privilege to have dinner every night with a prime minister who would talk about this business. Probably Pierre Trudeau was not talking hockey when he arrived home.”
When it comes to candidates having to withdraw from the race because of comments on social media, Chretien says just like in his day, when a candidate knows they’ve said or done something wrong, they step down.
