New Westminster’s Mayor says he’s pleased with news TransLink is scrapping plans to upgrade the Pattullo Bridge.
Jonathan Cote says taking the upgrade off the table will help the push for a full bridge replacement.
“Certainly expressed concerns about 100-million dollars being put in place to rehabilitate the existing bridge. And the disruption that the rehabilitation process was going to cause. We think this puts the focus on building a brand new bridge and that’s where we think that focus needs to be.”
TransLink pulled the upgrade after projected costs spiraled out of control.
It says it will now spend the minimum to keep the bridge in service until it is replaced.
Cote says he hopes to see action on a new crossing within a year — though a final product would be five to eight years away.
