Commuters bracing for traffic chaos next year on the Pattullo Bridge can breathe a sigh of relief.
Translink staff had been warning drivers to prepare for major delays during its overhaul of the 78-year-old crossing in April.
But now, officials say the planned seismic improvements are too expensive.
Spokesperson Cheryl Ziola says work will now only focus on “essential deck repairs.”
That will extend the life of the bridge, until a new one can be built.
Translink was banking on funds from the transit plebiscite, but since that failed, officials are trying to figure out how to come up with their portion of the money for a new bridge.
