Downtown Vancouver was a busy place yesterday evening.
Between the Canucks hosting a preseason game, an AC/DC concert at B.C. Place, three extra cruise ships in port, and the UBCM convention, thousands more people were in the core.
One woman told Global News she planned far in advance to get into the city to try and beat the rush.
“We booked before we even bought our tickets, we heard they were coming, we booked our hotel, we booked our flights, and we waited for them to come on sale.”
Rooms had reportedly been sold out at many downtown hotels, and the rates for one night in Vancouver had gone up by hundreds of dollars.
Craig Norris-Jones at the Pan Pacific Hotel told Global News he had this day marked on his calendar.
“We identified this day for a little while now. So we knew the last day of summer, so today would be a really busy day.”
Hotels in the downtown core were going for a premium, upwards of $590 in some spots.
