The family of Terry Fox is clarifying its support for a Conservative Party announcement made on Sunday.
Outgoing MP James Moore, who represents Port Moody – Westwood – Port Coquitlam, announced his government, if re-elected, would match the Terry Fox Foundation’s fundraising efforts this year up to $35 million.
He told reporters “the Fox family was aware of the announcement and think it’s great.”
The Fox family issued a statement on Monday, saying they in fact did not “respond enthusiastically” to the party’s announcement.
The statement goes on: “We will continue to make no public comments with respect to any federal party promises during the election campaign unless it’s a unified all-party announcement.”
The announcement coincided with the 35th annual Terry Fox run.
Moore has said in a Twitter message to CKNW he regrets the timing has upset the family, but adds that parties committing to research is a good thing.
