The installation of a monument in the memory of three farm workers began today, with the trunk of the Golden Tree being put in place.
It’ll be unveiled at the International Friendship Centre on George Ferguson Way in Abbotsford, north of Clearbrook Library on October 3rd.
The women were killed when the crowded van that transported them to the farms crashed back in 2007.
Irene Lanzinger, the president of BC Federation of Labour believes that the monument will bring the community together.
“For the community it means that there will be a lasting memorial to three moms, and sisters, and friends who died. It also means for all of us that we have an opportunity to honour the lives of three women, and to honour all farm workers.”
The tree shaped sculpture is serving as a tribute to part time farm-workers, the first of its kind in Canada, and will be completed early next month.
