B.C.’s police watching says an off-duty officer may have committed an offence in a 2014 car accident which killed an Abbotsford teenager.
14-year-old Marcus Larabie was longboarding on December 26 of last year when a car hit him.
He later died in hospital.
Abbotsford Police did identify the driver as an off-duty officer who remained at the scene.
The IIO says in a news release the acting chief civilian investigator has reviewed the file and forwarded a report to the Criminal Justice Branch.
Spokeswoman Kelli Kilpatrick says the report is the first referral of an off-duty officer to prosecutors, and wants them to consider an offence under the Motor Vehicle Act.
The watchdog says prosecutors must consider whether there’s a substantial likelihood of conviction and if a laying charges is in the public interest.
