Three hundred prominent Canadians have signed an open letter to the Prime Minister asking he seek the release of a Canadian journalist held in Egypt.
Among the signers are musicians like the Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie, journalists like CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, former Prime Minister Paul Martin, comedian Rick Mercer, and Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson.
They call the verdict in Mohamed Fahmy’s re-trial farcical saying he is in prison based on flimsy and distorted evidence.
The letter says Fahmy is an innocent man trapped in a political nightmare.
Adding the conditions in the prison pose a grave danger to Fahmy’s safety and health.
The letter says Fahmy’s only hope is for Prime Minister Stephen Harper to directly and persistently request Fahmy’s release.
