The Kurdi family’s tragic tale of escaping a conflict-torn Syrian-Kurdish region aren’t lost on a Vancouver-based volunteer group which aims to bring LGBTQ refugees to Canada.
“Syria is not a safe place for LGBTQ people at all.”
Chris Morrissey with Rainbow Refugee says members of the LGBTQ community in various countries e-mail her everyday looking for a sponsor.
But it’s a process which can take a minimum of 18 months.
“The processing time in those countries is so long. Unless there’s a designation of them being at higher risk than everybody else, you just have to wait.”
Morrissey, like many, says there’s too much red tape involved, and that the federal government needs to put more resources and personnel into speeding up the processing time for refugee sponsorship.
