North Vancouver mayor Darrell Mussatto returned from a recent trip to Norway after testing the city of Trondheim’s “CycloCable”, a one-of-a-kind bike lift.
Now, he’s thinking about bringing it here.
Mussatto admits it’s a concept which wouldn’t come cheap.
“Our city staff said it was over a million dollars.”
He says more discussion is needed whether to try the CycloCable or simply installing additional bike lanes, but says the bike lift would potentially generate more interest in cycling.
“The people that love it the most aren’t avid cyclists, they’re recreation cyclists. The people that cycle to school or to work that don’t always cycle.”
The mayor admits it would be an alluring tourist attraction as well.
“People come from all over the world just to check out the bike lift in Norway.”
Mussatto says Lonsdale Avenue would be an appealing location for a bike lift because of the heavy traffic and busy intersections.
