Evacuations are underway right now as the larger of the two wildfires near Oliver flares up
Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen’s Cam Baughn says the RCMP are evacuating some 27 homes.
“We are seeing winds move the fire to the north and as it moves north it is coming close to areas where there are homes. There is a rural road that runs from Oliver to Cawston called Fairview road and there are some areas in there that are heavily wooded. Our understanding is that the BC Wildfire Service wants us to evacuate those homes just in case the fire moves further North and affects those properties.”
The homes being evacuated are on Fairview, Old Golf Course, & Willowbrook Roads.
“We have got 27 properties or homes. We have search and rescue crews and RCMP out there right now doing the evacuations. We don’t know exactly how many homes are out there or what structures are out there. There might be a few barns or others things that are showing up as structures that may not be homes, but right now we have 27. The area is the West of Oliver…in between Oliver and Cawston.”
Evacuation precautionary for now
The Testalinden fire was last measured at 3700 hectares and was 60% contained, although that could now change.
Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen chair Mark Woods says the homes aren’t in any immediate danger.
“This is just in preparation. They’re experiencing some spotting of embers so the incident command is recommending these folks get out of the area so they’re able to attack the fire for their own safety. But at this point there’s no homes affected.”
In addition to evacuations of properties on and around Fairview, Willowbrook, and Old Golf Course Roads, anyone in the nearby Sawmill Lake forestry rec site is also being told to evacuate.
