A silver lining from the wildfires burning around BC as the thick smoke in parts of the province is actually calming some fire activity.
Chief Fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek says the smoke almost takes on the same quality as cloud cover, and absorbs heat.
However, he says the haze may prevent firefighters from seeing new blazes.
Public asked to be vigilant.
“The phone reports we’re getting from the public are very crucial because we are going to be having visibility issues that could pose an issue in terms of detecting new fires. So if people spot a distinct column of smoke or a fire we do ask them to report that as soon as possible to STAR 55-55.”
Right now there are 180 fires burning, most lightning caused.
