As firefighters continue to battle the Rock Creek wildfire east of Osoyoos, the Red Cross is in the area helping those who have lost their homes.
Provincial Red Cross Manager for Disaster Response Elysia Dempsey says the destruction is both sad and eerie to see.
“With fire it’s pretty devastating. We’ve worked on a lot of floods, and with fires you know when people loose their homes it’s pretty uncommon, especially with this intense fire. For those that have lost their home they need everything to replace what they’ve lost.”
Dempsey says they are looking for more volunteers to help talk to residents about what they need to get back on their feet.
“We find out what their needs are, and we work with the local community and other support agencies to identify those needs. The immediate needs are usually food, clothing and shelter. And longer terms are emotional support.”
The fire is 50% contained, but has grown in size.
