Leave the police work to the police.
That, from the New Westminster PD, after a social media post claiming to identify a man caught touching himself in front of kids at a water park has gone viral.
The poster alleges he chased the man out of Queens Park on Sunday.
That post has now been shared more than six thousand times.
But Acting Sergeant Jeff Scott says police have completed their investigation, and there’s no proof the man did anything criminal.
“That’s certainly a concern to us is when there are posts that are out there on social media that haven’t been founded, or haven’t received the full, complete, investigative side of the story, or hasn’t gone to court and all the circumstances aren’t out there.”
Scott says as part of their investigation, officers spoke to the poster, other witnesses, and the suspect himself.
He encourages anyone with a complaint to report it to police, along with any photos — and leave the investigation up to them.
“We don’t want people to make general assumptions and come to their own conclusions, without completing a complete report or investigation of it.”
