A summer holiday in the Okanagan has ended in heartbreaking tragedy for a Calgary family…
A 12 year-old camping at Osoyoos Lake with her family lost her life after slipping in shallow water yesterday evening.
RCMP Corporal Jason Bayda says she was with a friend when a series of waves caused her to lose her footing.
“As she was slipping down into the deeper water her friend was trying to hold but just couldn’t – it’s hard to imagine.”
“Although they are walking on a very shallow spot, it’s also very narrow and drops off quite quickly and that’s unfortunately what happened here – she slipped into the deeper water and just didn’t know how to swim.”
The girl went under and didn’t resurface.
Bayda say despite a massive search – that included helicopters in the area fighting fires – she wasn’t found until 40 minutes later and didn’t survive.
She couldn’t swim and didn’t have a life jacket on.
