Environment Canada has just issued a ‘special weather statement’ affecting a large area of the province.
The weather agency says heavy rains could trigger flash floods this afternoon.
It says thunderstorms will begin dumping rain on the Similkameen this afternoon, then the storm will sweep North and East.
Environment Canada says due to the drought, soil can’t absorb water as efficiently so heavy rains could trigger flash flooding.
It says the storm and heavy rainfall will sweep from the Similkameen through the Okanagan Valley, Nicola, Shuswap and North and South Thompson regions.
The weather agency suggests clearing drain openings in advance and warn people to stay away from flood prone areas.
