It looks like the City of New Westminster hasn’t been living up to its promise of making sure all of its workers are paid a “Living Wage.”
CKNW has learned some contractors and sub contractors haven’t been getting the $20.68 an hour they are supposed to.
Resident Christopher Bell has filed many complaints with the city.
That’s after talking to contracted city workers who don’t realize they should be making a living wage.
“There’s no oversight of whether or not the living wage is being paid to these citizens.”
Joan Burgess with the City’s Human Resources Department says they’ve had four cases in the past few years.
“We then proceeded to do an audit, and in each case, the contractor has recognized that they’ve failed to carry out their obligation, and has corrected that.”
In New Westminster, paying contracted and sub-contracted city workers a Living Wage has been in place since July of 2011.
