A Kelowna man is in critical condition after attempting a free dive in Okanagan Lake on Sunday.
Cpl. Joe Duncan with Kelowna RCMP says the 27 year old man was with his girlfriend when the incident occurred.
“After several minutes the man’s girlfriend realized he had not surfaced. She jumped into the lake and located the submerged man and brought him to the surface… RCMP members responded via boat and by land, the 27 year old male was transported to hospital via air ambulance.”
Free diving relies on the person’s ability to hold their breath for long periods of time, and has been described as the world’s second most dangerous activity.
This comes more than a week after Natalia Molchanovo, often called the world’s greatest free diver, disappeared off the coast of Spain while conducting a dive.
