As many people started heading home from Vancouver bars and clubs Saturday morning, others were getting up early to kick off a soccer celebration.
As of today, Baraclays Premier Soccer League is in full swing.
Hundreds of soccer supporters woke up before sunrise to descend upon seven different Vancouver pubs.
Damon Holowchak with the Donnelly Group says each team’s supporters club has their own home pub.
“Our original supporters club was Liverpool, but they were six or seven guys who would come in at three in the morning and gather around a TV, and now Liverpool will be a few hundred people at four in the morning.”
Holochak says support groups show up at their home pub as early as 4am to watch the games.
“By establishing a home for a supporters group…we give one their home pub and that’s their spot and it’s worked out really really well.”
Liverpool supporter Rod Coleman moved to Vancouver from England seven years ago and joined the Liverpool support group soon after.
“Honestly when I first came over to Vancouver it was one of my main concerns was not having anybody to watch the football with anymore. I wasn’t really sure what to expect from it, but I gave it a go and to be honest it was so much better than what I ever imagined it would be.”
Coleman says it is well worth it to wake up that early and watch the game with friends.
“When it’s one of our big games the club is usually close to capacity, and it’s usually a really good atmosphere.”
The League runs from August until the end of May.
