A woman who works with children and families on the downtown east side is calling for an overhaul of the Ministry of Children and Family Development, not just another report.
Frustrated, is how Judy McGuire with the Inner City Safety Society is feeling. That is because after a damning court ruling found a government staff member allowed kids to return to a sexually abusive father, that employee is still working for the ministry – weeks later.
She says not only has the ministry done review after review, so has Children’s watchdog Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond.
“Unless the ministry is really willing to take it on, is really willing to put enough money into it, and is willing to stop protecting bureaucrats who are not doing their job and are, in fact, putting children at risk – it’s absolutely unconscionable. It should not be going on.”
She says a number of previous reports by children’s watchdog Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond have clearly laid out where the ministry is failing time and time again.
McGuire adds she hopes Turpel-Lafond will investigate the latest ministry tragedy made public two weeks ago, even though the ministry has appointed a government insider to do the job.
