If I am a member of Whitecaps FC over the next 34 days, anytime I get a chance to grab 40-winks, it is cat nap time.
Between August 1 and August 29, the local 11 will play eight matches in three separate competitions. And it won’t just be 11 chaps on the pitch, it will be all feet on deck for these contests.
This will be quite the challenge for coach Carl Robinson and his staff. The team is looking pretty healthy as the Caps hierarchy will have to do some serious lineup juggling.
First there is regular MLS action with Vancouver facing Seattle, Real Salt Lake, Sporting KC, FC Dallas and Houston. They are in the thick of the hyper competitive Western Conference playoff race with all of those teams.
There is the championship of Canada as the Whitecaps square off with Montreal for the Voyageurs Cup in a home and home total goal series.
Finally, there is the team’s maiden voyage into the CONCACAF Champions League as the Whitecaps are in a group with the arch rival Sounders and Olimpia of Honduras. On August 1, Vancouver is in the Emerald City for a MLS match which is followed four nights later for the first Champions League affair.
There are a lot of games. Here is a simple way to keep track. If it’s a Wednesday or a Saturday next month, the Whitecaps will be in action, with the exception of Wednesday August 19th. It’s tiring just mapping it out.
You won’t hear anybody in the organization complain. This is a sign of success. It’s all about lifting trophies.
In the mean time and in between time ( at least over the next month), when the Sandmen enters, it will all be about sawing logs and grabbing some ZZZZZZ or Zeds for the ‘Caps.
