Standing since 1938 on East Broadway at Commercial, The Rio Theatre is one of only a handful of independent movie theatres still standing in the city. It’s also the only theatre in the city where you can order an adult beverage.
Sean Leslie caught up with Corinne Lea, who took over the theatre and turned it into a multimedia venue with live music, films, comedy shows, burlesque and more.
Back in 2012 Corinne staged a fight with the city to allow her a liquor licence, and its a fight she one. As she stold Sean,
“When you come to see a show, you’re not doing shots, you’re here to see a show. Especially with a movie, you usually don’t want to miss a minute of it. So you get your drink, you go in, and then you’re watching your show.”
