Changes are coming to the only remaining Coast Guard presence in Vancouver proper.
Defence minister Jason Kenney announced today a new Coast Guard Environmental Response office will be created in Stanley Park’s HMCS Discovery naval base.
A polluton response vessel will also be stationed there.
The feds says it will be the first time a pollution response vessel has been station in Vancouver harbour full time.
The now closed Kits base had a pollution response vessel stationed at it.
The Inshore Rescue Boat station will also be open longer from May to Thanksgiving weekend, instead of closing on Labour Day.
The IRB station created in the aftermath of the closure of Kitsilano Coast Guard base is manned by a Coast Guard Rescue Specialist who acts as the station Coxswain.
The officer is assisted by two other volunteer staff.
Last month staff at the station were so overworked the station had to be taken offline for about six hours so they could get some sleep.
