A report from a not-for-profit group based in Vancouver says it’s a mixed bag of results when it comes to the health of homeless youngsters across BC.
Annie Smith with the McCreary Centre Society says mental health is now the major issue young homeless people face.
Many teens on the street are struggling to find help dealing with their mental health issues.
But Smith says there’s been a change in the way homeless youth use substances.
“In 2006, we saw very high rates of young people using substances at the age of eight or nine. We didn’t see things like that this time, we saw young people waiting until they were older, if they were going to use them at all.”
Many of the close to 700 12-to-19 year olds polled said they wanted to see more safe and affordable housing, as well as better access to job training and youth-focused centres.
