I have to admit I’m feeling a little melancholy heading into this week’s BC Lions game.
It will be the final Braley Bowl at BC Place.
Mr. David Braley is now in his 19th campaign as the owner of this province’s CFL team. He also bailed out the eight team circuit in 2010 when he became the owner of The Toronto Argonauts.
Mr. Braley hands over the ships wheel of the Argonauts to Larry Tanenbaum, MLSE and Bell after this season.
I always looked forward to each Braley Bowl. Mainly because it was preposterous there was one owner who bankrolled a quarter of the teams in the Canadian Football League.
He also swooped in from Steeltown and saved the league. Since 2010, the CFL has found its footing and expanded into Ottawa and is hauling in some major coin with its television deal.
It seems when the cameras caught Mr. Braley at these contests between BC and the double blue, he was always in neutral colours. I always wondered who he was pulling for. He is Hamilton born and bred and once owned the Tabbies. So it is probably safe to say he would never be rooting for the Are-no-goods. Going by the dispatches out of the centre of the universe, the players and management can’t wait until the team changes hands.
Just once, and maybe he will do it Friday or the day before Halloween in the T-Dot. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if David Braley shaves the Lions logo into his crew cut on the left side and the Argonauts “A” shaved into the right side of his melon to celebrate the final Braley Bowls?
