Without being too optimistic, yesterday was a good day for fire crews battling the Westside fire near Kelowna– minimal growth Wednesday. However, the fire, now a little more than 460 hectares, still threatens about 70 homes.
Fire information officer Melissa Klassen says the Westside Road has been acting as a barrier along the eastern flank of the fire.
“We’ve had a heavy presence alongside that road; wetting down that line, making sure that any active fire there is mopped up and put out, and dug up, so we don’t see any spot-overs from across the road.”
More than 60 firefighters continue to battle the blaze.
“Right now our concern is the southern, and the northern flanks of the fire, along with protecting that area around Westside Road, is just mitigating any growth in those aspects of the fire, and we do have retardant lye applied in that area. So, we haven’t seen the fire breach that as of yet.”
70 homes remain under an evacuation order.
