It’s a problem that’s uprooted not only the food and vegetable needs of a few community gardens in Richmond – it’s also caused damage and disappointment.
Ian Lai has a plot at the Terra Nova community garden in Richmond.
He says he’s been hearing more about plot owners losing their crops to theft.
“I’m starting to get a lot of comments from gardeners who are in this area that they’ve noticed crops going missing. I personally have noticed some of my crops going missing.”
Lai says there’s not much that can be done.
And even if the RCMP or the city were willing to help…
“Once you bring in a different layer of government, once you bring in the police, there’s a whole different sense of environment.”
Lai says those at the community garden want to fix the problem with more signage and better fencing.
