Cyclists took to the streets of Burnaby in the biggest Giro di Burnaby in event history on Thursday.
Close to 80 women and over 150 men took part in this year’s race, and Assistant Race Director Gregory Dion says interest is continuing to grow.
“From a community perspective, we definitely are seeing more of an interest in cycling, you know with the Olympics and the Tour de France becoming more and more popular in the world, it definitely helps our community interest.”
Dion says teams come from as far as Germany, Trinidad and Tobago and Australia to participate in the race.
“We’ve had riders in our race who have gone on to the Tour de France within a year or two, so this really is a starting ground for some of these young pros who are going to go to be the best in the world.”
The Giro di Burnaby is part of BC Super Week which includes races like the Tour de Delta and the Gastown Grand Prix.
SuperWeek ends on July 18th.
