A three hundred percent increase in small fires over the same period last year has Richmond’s fire captain frustrated.
To make things worse, Kirby Graham says at least half of the two hundred fires they’ve seen since May first are completely avoidable, caused by tossed cigarettes.
With the current drought conditions, he says, it takes just seconds for fire to erupt, causing concern and taxing resources.
“You know what we’re having to move trucks from “A” to “B” and over to “C” and when trucks are involved they can’t answer other emergency calls”
Graham says if you smoke, make sure your cigarette is completely out.
And he suggests having a water source nearby so you can douse your butt to be sure there is no risk of fire.
