In just two days, the 2015 Pan-American Games will officially get underway in the City of Toronto. Followed closely by the Para-Pan AM Games which will begin for another fortnight on August 3rd. A sports-a-palooza if you will.
Yet many of us will ignore it…I will not be one of those people.
My first instinct is like many of you out there; it’s in Toronto, it will just be about Toronto. I hate Toronto. These games are not about Toronto, they are about Canada, and in particular Canadian athletes taking on the world.
Toronto will be the backdrop, and we will certainly be subject to the vignettes about Toronto this and Toronto that. These are the same background and in depth stories that we delivered and also watched on TV with baited breath when a certain games of the ringed variety were here in 2010.
We watched them and were excited about them because they were our stories. So if you don’t want to watch those stories, go make a sandwich or perhaps take a break in the loo. Then come back and watch the athletes…our athletes.
Canadian athletes from coast to coast will take part in this event, which rivals the Commonwealth Games in events and participation and is second only to the Olympics in athlete participation. It is a sporting competition where we get to cheer our athletes on.
There are 48 different events and multiple disciplines within those events. If you turn on the TV, there is a good chance that you will watch some of these games because you will find a sport that you either like to play or like to watch.
I’m not asking you to support Toronto, I am asking you to support Canadian athletics. It would be the Canadian thing to do.
