A few days before a Winter or Summer Olympics and just recently about a month ago for the Women’s World Cup, we in the newsroom receive a PDF file explaining which broadcaster has exclusive rights to distribute the event on television, radio, the internet and mobile platforms.
We are not to re-broadcast any of the games, or start up a website dedicated to the competition.
Another one of those e-mails arrived in the inbox today, and when it was opened, I actually LOL’d, yep laughed out loud.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation wanted us to know, they, and only they, have the exclusive right in Canada to broadcast the Pan-American and Parapan American Games.
The what? Oh right, those games.
Where are they? Wow. The Big Smoke. The T-Dot. The centre of the universe. That’s right, the city in the country which has not been able to host an Olympics or a Women’s World Cup match.
Great logo. Wait, the logo might be the worst ever. It looks like giant floating amoeba. Are those supposed to be letters?!?!?! Seriously it was designed by some hippy in the 60’s on a bad acid trip or a two-year-old.
I look forward to the truck loads of merchandise that will still not be sold weeks after the event at 75% off.
So, hey Mother Corp, don’t worry about us. We will be fine. Tell your lawyers they can still take summer vacation over the next two weeks to avoid the traffic jam these games are creating. They can enjoy cottage country.
