A single-engine Cessna plane carrying one pilot has crashed on Highway 97 near Osoyoos.
Bill Yearwood with the Transportation Safety Board says it’s unknown if the pilot was trying to land on Highway 97.
“I don’t know if it had a problem with trying to land or if it hit a power line or what. There is a power pole in the area where it came to rest. We have to determine the facts as time unfolds. All I have is the pilot escaped the aircraft before it was consumed by fire.”
The pilot has been taken to hospital with unknown injuries.
“The aircraft stopped on the highway and was consumed by fire. I don’t know the extent of his or her injuries. The fire is out and we’re going to follow up as the evening and morning goes on to find out what might have happened.”
Yearwood says there was a large billowing of smoke following the crash.
