Delta has taken a rather unusual step to try and prevent wildfires in the muncipality’s parks.
Mayor Lois Jackson says Delta’s three biggest parks are now closed off to the public.
“We are closing off the Delta watershed, the Delta nature reserve is now going to be closed to the public until further notice, and of course Burns Bog is absolutely closed.”
As for people who may choose to ignore the closure Jackson says they risk big fines
“The fines start at $200 and they go up from there and certainly I am sure Delta’s finest will be right there on your doorstep.”
Jackson says with tinder dry conditions staff will be keeping an eye on park entrances to ensure no one ventures in.
“We are going to have them monitored by several different departments including some people from Metro Vancouver, some people from our engineering area, bylaw enforcement, and parks. So we will have a variety of people monitoring these areas.”
She says they will also send letters to Delta residents asking them to keep an eye out for smoke and report anything untoward to the municipality.
